SRA is encouraging scullers to use a fannypack flotation device. Here is a sample of one. Please feel free to look around for better prices.

New!! Sculling Punchcards: Members who need some flexibility in taking a class now have the option of purchasing a punchcard. Punchcards will allow you to pre-purchase a set number of classes, allowing you the flexibility of attending sculling classes at your convenience. Click here for more information.

Information for New Rowers:

Float Test: The SRA float test must be completed before the first day of class. To complete, please bring the float test form found at the back of the Adult Registration Packet to any local pool with a lifeguard (i.e. YMCA, municipal pool, health club.)

The lifeguard will have you jump in the pool and tread water for 10 min. Please wear shorts and a tee-shirt that you do not mind getting wet, as the lifeguard will require that you complete the test with clothes on (to simulate a boat accident.)

Sculling v Sweep Rowing: Sculling involves the use of two shorter oars, generally taking place in smaller boats (1 or 2 people.) Sweep rowing involves each rower using one longer oar, and generally takes place in larger boats (4-8 people.) Sculling classes are smaller in number, capping at 6 people. Sweep classes may have anywhere from 8-30 members per class.

What to Wear: Please come to the first day of class wearing tennis shoes, comfortable long pants (unless very warm outside), and several top layers including a tee-shirt, long-sleeved shirt and warm outer layer. Please note that our boathouse does not have heat, so dressing in warm layers will ensure a comfortable experience!

Note: The SRA office will be closed and there will be no classes held on the following dates in 2008:

• May 24-26 (Memorial Day Weekend)
• July 4th & 5th (Independence Day holiday)
• September 1st (Labor Day)
• November 27-30 (Thanksgiving)
• December 24-January 2nd (Winter Holiday)

Masters Sculling: Group Scull
This is an informal class designed to get rowers out on the water in quads and straight fours with the safety of a coaching launch.  Lineups will be selected by rowers and may include most boat sizes.  The safety boat will launch at 5:15am- rowers who arrive after this time may still launch after communicating via radio with the coach.  Coaching staff will rotate weekly.  This class will be a great opportunity for SRA members to meet and row alongside other members, and to practice lineups in larger boats that require an SRA safety launch to be present.  This class is does not require advance registration and is available by SRA punchcard only.  Boat reservations are highly encouraged- rowers who have not reserved a boat will be able to select non-reserved boats on a first-come first-served basis.  This group is intended for intermediate to advanced level rowers.
